It’s official: fame has gone to my head. I’m actually surprised it took this long.
A month or so ago, I mentioned to a friend that – according to Facebook – her husband and I shared a mutual acquaintance in Jon, the owner of Evolution of Style, one of SG’s lovely sponsors. This week, she related a story to me that pretty much made my year. Apparently, she finally got around to asking her husband how he knew Jon (spoiler: they went to high school together), and told him that I got my start blogging for his site.
“Wait, wait, you know Style Girlfriend?” he asked her, incredulously.
Yeah, I pretty much died.
Along with my new-found fame, though, comes great responsibility. My friend went on to tell me how much her husband enjoys my posts (Hi Paul, thanks for reading!), but he ‘fessed up in embarrassment that he’s constantly violating my “rules.”
Oh no! I thought. I need to straighten this out.
I never want anyone to feel bad about their own style after reading my musings.
So without further ado, let me clarify a l’il about what we’re doing here. Or trying to, anyway.
“What is Style Girlfriend, anyway?”
At Style Girlfriend, we share insight from an all-female editorial team into the type of man women want to be with, from how he dresses to how he acts. Because a jerk in a great suit? He’s still just a jerk.
When it comes to clothes, we believe style (or even its snootier cousin, “fashion”) is NOT reserved for those with six-pack abs and a black Amex. Our followers are guys living in big cities and small towns, dads with two kids and a mortgage, undergrads getting by on a ramen noodle budget, and all kinds of guys in between.
What do they all have in common? They understand that when you look good, you feel good about yourself. And that kind of confidence? Well, it’s contagious.
“So, you’re telling me what clothes I should wear?”
First of all, we don’t really like the word “should” around here. We can offer ideas on clothes to buy, or outfits to wear, but ultimately, you’re the one pulling the trigger on a new purchase, or trying a new trend.
Of course, we want to make living with style easier with the features our team writes up, and even with on-demand shopping help so you can start feeling like a million bucks. So when we push you out of your comfort zone, fashion or otherwise, it’s with good intentions. Because we want you to look and act as awesome as we’re sure you are. And when we gently suggest it’s time to retire a staple of your closet (cough, frat shirts, cough) or think about a current even through a female lens, it’s only because we believe it would help you on your way towards being your best self.
But if you read our ramblings and think, This chick doesn’t know what she’s talking about. My girlfriend/wife/mother (I don’t judge) loves how I dress and act. Y’know what? She might, but she also might just love you too much to tell you she hates everything you own, or that it drives her crazy when you interrupt her at dinner. And we’re not under any obligation to love you through good clothes and attitude, or bad. We want you to look good and act right, and this is the spot to hear that advice unfiltered.

Masculinity and gender roles are more confusing than ever today. We get it. Followers can trust Style Girlfriend to give good advice on how to act around women because we are women! And we’re not shy about letting you know what we like, and what we definitely don’t.
To us, a man who is living his life with style means someone who dresses his best and who wants to be a partner and an ally to the women in his life. Someone who feels confident and who uses that confidence to lift others up, not keep them down. Someone who is open to having a conversation about his privilege and how he can wield it in support of those who have less.
